
Advocacy
- Assist with identifying the student’s special educational needs.
- Help with working cooperatively with the students’ district representative and other authorities within the education system to develop and implement special education services for the student.
- Explain, in a non-legal capacity, my understanding of certain provisions of the IDEA, the 504 process and help determine which program(s) are appropriate.
- Collaborate on the development of the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
- Advocate for the student at meetings requested to be attended by either the parent, student or legal guardian.
- Inform the parent, on a regular basis of contacts, phone consultations and/or conferences with the students’ district representative and other authorities within the education system serving the student as well as independent consultants hired either by the school district or by the student’s parents and/or him and herself.
- Provide information for post-graduate services for the student, including vocational training options and residential placement possibilities.
